Nevada Donor Network Announces Donor Registration Campaign for National Donate Life Month

Nevada Donor Network

Nevada Donor Network

Las Vegas  – To celebrate National Donate Life Month, Nevada Donor Network will kick off a statewide campaign to register 2,016 organ, eye and tissue donors in Nevada this April. National Donate Life Month encourages Americans to register as donors, and celebrates those who have saved lives through donation.

Through registry events, a statewide media campaign and a social media awareness campaign, Nevada Donor Network hopes to increase the number of registrations by April 30. Through its “Live Life, Give Life” campaign, Nevada Donor Network is partnering with businesses, partner organizations and non-profits across the state to help “spread the electronic word” by providing a turnkey social media kit for partners to utilize on their social channels. On National Blue & Green Day, April 15, people are encouraged to wear blue and green and post pictures on social media to bring awareness to the importance of donation. Nevadans who have not yet designated their wishes regarding donation are encouraged to register. While most people are familiar with the opportunity to register at the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles, many don’t know that online registration is also available any time at www.nvdonor.org.

HOW IMPORTANT IS THE NEED?

  • Currently more than 122,000 patients are on the US waiting list, in need of an organ transplant. Nearly 600 of those patients are Nevadans.
  • 22 people die each day because there are not enough organs available.
  • 1 million tissue transplants are completed each year
  • 48,000 people receive the gift of sight through cornea donation yearly

WILL FIRST RESPONDERS AND MEDICAL PERSONNEL SAVE MY LIFE IF I’M A REGISTERED DONOR?

The preservation of life is always the number one priority of first responders, doctors and nurses. If you are sick or injured, they will always work to save your life.

AM I TOO OLD TO BE A DONOR?

Anyone can register as a donor. All people, regardless of age or medical history, should consider themselves potential donor heroes.

ARE THERE ANY COSTS TO THE FAMILY?

A donor’s family will never be asked to pay any costs associated with the donation process.

To learn more about organ, eye and tissue donation and the “Live Life, Give Life” Donate Life Month campaign, please visit www.nvdonor.org.

LAS VEGAS SURGEON OFFERS NEW REJUVENATING VAMPIRE FACIAL

SurgiSpa Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery Dr. Arthur Cambeiro

SurgiSpa Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery Dr. Arthur Cambeiro

SurgiSpa owner and plastic surgeon Dr. Arthur Cambeiro adds innovative non-invasive procedure to his services

(Las Vegas) — Dr. Arthur Cambeiro, owner of SurgiSpa Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery, today announced his Las Vegas-based practice is offering Vampire Facials and Vampire Face Lifts to help rejuvenate and revitalize a patient’s facial tissue. This new non-invasive and innovative procedure requires no anesthesia; allows patients to recover more quickly than most procedures; and helps drastically reduce the look of lines and aging without surgery.
“Our patients are ecstatic about the benefits of the Vampire Facial,” said Dr. Cambeiro. “They are impressed with the results from the PRP (platelet rich plasma with growth factors) that are injected or microneedled into the face. The Vampire Facial and Face Lift is completely natural with no additives or other chemicals, achieving a glowing, youthful look.
The Vampire Facial involves using blood from the patient’s arm that is then injected into the face via microneedling or by a small needle. The blood is first spun in a centrifuge to separate the red and white blood cells from the platelet rich plasma. The plasma is rich in growth factors that promote growth and rejuvenation. This procedure uses the patient’s own growth factors to restore shape and tone to the face.
Kealohalana Elvester, a patient of Dr. Cambeiro’s, said she found her results to be extremely positive and that she didn’t experience any pain during the process. Elvester was pleased with the short recovery time and her results. Since having the Vampire Facial procedure she has suggested the service and recommended SurgiSpa to several of her friends and colleagues.
“It’s using your own body to heal your own body,” Elvester says. “You’re not sticking nasty chemicals into your face to help keep your skin looking younger. It’s better for you and it works.”

WGU Named a Top School by Military Advanced Education for 9th Consecutive Year

Nonprofit, online university recognized for providing service members, veterans, and their families with flexible, affordable education

SALT LAKE CITY- (January 5, 2016) Western Governors University (WGU) has been named a Top School by Military Advanced Education (MAE) for the ninth year in a row. In its 2016 Guide to Colleges & Universities, the publication highlights institutions that provide the best educational options and fit for military service members, veterans, and their families.

WGU was selected as a military-friendly school for its affordability, flexibility, and personalized one-on-one faculty support. WGU’s online bachelor’s and master’s degree programs are approved for tuition assistance for active-duty, reserve, and National Guard personnel. Veterans are eligible for education benefits through the G.I. Bill. Because of WGU’s affordable tuition of about $6,000 per year for most programs, veterans are generally eligible for benefits that fully cover tuition and fees.

WGU’s competency-based learning model is ideal for adult learners—especially military personnel—because it allows students to study and learn on their own schedule and at their own pace. Students can apply what they’ve learned at work, in the service, and in previous courses to move quickly through what they already know, while taking the time they need to focus on what they still need to learn. Students who devote additional time to their studies can often accelerate their programs, saving both time and money. WGU faculty members work one-on-one with students as mentors, offering guidance, support, and individualized instruction.

“As a military spouse, I needed the flexibility that WGU provides. This was crucial to my success,” said Carly Merritt, a recent WGU Teachers College graduate who began teaching her first year of kindergarten shortly after earning her bachelor’s degree. “Over a span of a few years, my husband and I moved from California to Guam to Hawaii back to California and finally to Nevada. Being able to study and complete coursework anywhere I had an Internet connection allowed me to earn my degree and move my career forward.”

The online university recently launched a $125,000 scholarship program aimed at helping veterans go back to school to complete their bachelor’s or master’s degrees. The WGU Salute to Veterans Scholarship, which will accept applications until January 31, 2016, is valued at up to $2,500 per student, with up to 50 scholarships awarded to new students nationwide. In addition to this special Veterans Day scholarship, the WGU Military Appreciation Scholarship is an ongoing scholarship available year-round to military personnel, their spouses, and veterans.

Of the more than 64,000 WGU students enrolled across the country, more than 7,000 are active-duty military personnel, their dependent family members, or veterans. For more information about WGU and military or veterans’ benefits, visit wgu.edu/military.

About WGU

Now with more than 64,000 students and 55,000 graduates nationwide, WGU offers more than 50 online, competency-based bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in the high-demand fields of business, K-12 teacher education, information technology, and health professions, including nursing. Recognized by President Obama as an innovative university that “awards credits based on learning, not seat time,” WGU has been named one of Fast Company’s “Most Innovative Companies ” and has been featured on NPR’s “All Things Considered,” NBC Nightly News, CNN’s “Schools of Thought,” and in The New York Times.

WGU is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. The university has earned the support of more than 20 leading corporations and foundations, including AT&T, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Lilly Endowment, HCA, Hewlett-Packard, Lumina Foundation, Microsoft, Oracle, SunGard Higher Education, USA Funds, and Zions Bank. More information is available at wgu.edu or by calling 866.225.5948.

Nevada Supreme Court Justice James Hardesty Files for Re-Election

Justice James Hardesty filed for re-election in Carson City today, seeking his third six-year term with the Nevada Supreme Court.

Hardesty was first elected to the Nevada Supreme Court in 2004, and retained without opposition in 2010. He served as Chief Justice in 2009 and 2015, and successfully implemented Nevada’s Court of Appeals, which was approved by voters in 2014. Since its implementation, the Court of Appeals has helped reduce the backlog of pending Supreme Court cases by more than 400.

In 2015, Hardesty was also elected as Second Vice President and a member of the board of directors for the Conference of Chief Justices, a national organization composed of the states’ and territories’ top jurists. He was the first Nevada chief justice to be elected as an officer with the organization, and the fourth to be elected to their board of directors.

“It has been my privilege to work for the citizens of Nevada, and an honor to serve on the Nevada Supreme Court,” said Hardesty. “With this filing, I will continue to work tirelessly for an effective, efficient appeals process for all Nevadans, and further improve our state’s judicial system alongside my dedicated colleagues.”

In his 12 years of Supreme Court service, Hardesty negotiated the approval of a Supreme Court courthouse in Las Vegas, which reduced the court’s rent by $500,000 over the next 10 years. He also secured $3 million in state general funding to support specialty courts throughout Nevada for fiscal years 2016 and 2017. Hardesty was unanimously nominated by his Supreme Court colleagues for the William H. Rehnquist Award for Judicial Excellence in 2013, a nomination that was supported by the Chief Judges for the Second and Eighth Judicial District Courts.

A native Nevadan, Hardesty graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno and practiced law in Reno from 1975 through 1998. He was elected District Court Judge for the Second Judicial District of Washoe County in November 1998, and elected by his fellow judges to serve as Chief Judge in 2001 and 2003. Hardesty also served as president of the Nevada District Judges Association in 2003.

Las Vegas Surgeon Using New Technology to Prevent Complications with Breast Augmentation Procedures

SurgiSpa owner and plastic surgeon Dr. Arthur Cambeiro uses ultrasound technology to help prevent capsular contracture, a surgical complication in breast implants
(Las Vegas)— Dr. Arthur Cambeiro, owner of SurgiSpa Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery, is now using an advanced ultrasound treatment to help prevent breast augmentation patients from developing capsular contracture, the most common complication following breast enhancement surgery.
“We began offering a non-invasive treatment option that uses ultrasound technology to treat mild to moderate capsular contracture, which can occur in five to 10 percent of patients,” Cambeiro said. “Until recently, women needed surgery to treat this but now we can both help prevent and treat it at its earliest stages.”
Breast augmentation surgery involves the creation of small pockets for implant placement. In the vast majority of cases, the tissue surrounding the implant remains soft and pliable. Capsular contracture occurs when the tissue hardens and begins squeezing the implant. It is typically a cosmetic concern that distorts the shape of the breast, but in the most severe cases, the condition can become painful.
In a 7-year [link: http://www.prweb.com/releases/2011/11/prweb8945023.htm]* study, moderate to severe capsular contracture was found to develop in as many as 15% of patients. It was also the most common cause for reoperation in the postoperative period.
When Dr. Cambeiro performs breast enhancement service [link: http://www.surgispa.net/plastic-surgery/] plastic surgery at his SurgiSpa™ clinic in Las Vegas, patients are informed of this preventive option, especially those patients with a high risk of developing capsular contracture.
“These are mostly women who are undergoing a revision breast augmentation procedure because of capsular contracture,” Dr. Cambeiro said. “I may also recommend it for patients who are concerned about their risk of having this complication because a member of their family developed it after getting [link: http://www.surgispa.net/plastic-surgery/breast-enhancement/breast-augmentation/breast-implant-options] breast implants.”
Innovation is a key part of Cambeiro’ s philosophy and he believes that advanced treatments such as the External Ultrasound offer patients a welcome alternative to revision breast implant surgery.
Although the precise cause of capsular contracture isn’t known, recent research suggests that bacteria is a primary factor, creating a film around the implant. The ultrasound waves break down this filmy envelope and, combined with antibiotics, effectively treat the condition.
“Whether used to prevent or treat capsular contracture, the after-surgery ultrasound technique offers patients a non-surgical alternative that is effective for many women,” Dr. Cambeiro said. “I’m excited to provide my patients with this option.”

WGU Nevada Announces Las Vegas Latin Chamber Partnership and $32,000 in Scholarships

Nonprofit, online university to award up to 10 scholarships

to members of the Latin Chamber

NEVADA (December 15, 2015) — In collaboration with the Las Vegas Latin Chamber of Commerce, WGU Nevada is encouraging busy professionals to embark on a continuing education journey by offering more than $30,000 in scholarships to members of the chamber. The WGU Nevada Otto Merida Scholarship was created in honor of the founder and long-serving chief executive officer of the Latin Chamber of Commerce.

“WGU Nevada is proud to partner with the Latin Chamber of Commerce to create the Otto Merida Scholarship, honoring an important figure in the chamber’s history and development,” said WGU Nevada Chancellor Dr. Spencer Stewart. “These scholarships are one of the many ways we are helping Nevadans achieve their educational and career goals.”

The scholarships, valued at up to $3,200 per student, will be applied at the rate of $800 per six-month term, renewable for up to four terms. Scholarships are available to new students looking to earn a bachelor’s or master’s degree in any of WGU Nevada’s more than 50 degree programs in information technology, business, teacher education, or healthcare. Potential awardees must be a member of the chamber, or belong to a member company, which comprises more than 800 members.

Unlike traditional schools, WGU Nevada starts new terms on the first of every month, so it’s never too late to begin the journey. To be considered for one of the Otto Merida Scholarships, prospective students must be officially admitted to WGU Nevada and submit a scholarship application by Jan. 31, 2016. This is a competitive program and scholarships will be awarded based on an applicant’s academic record, financial need, readiness for online study at WGU Nevada, current competency, as well as other considerations.

WGU Nevada uses an innovative approach to learning called competency-based education, which measures learning rather than time spent in class. Students earn their degrees by demonstrating mastery of the subject matter they need to know to be successful—real-world competencies developed with employer input. Designed to meet the needs of adult learners in Nevada, competency-based education allows students to take advantage of their knowledge and experience to move quickly through material they already know so they can focus on what they still need to learn. Faculty members work one-on-one with students as mentors, offering guidance, support, and individualized instruction. While WGU Nevada’s degree programs are rigorous and challenging, competency-based learning makes it possible for students to accelerate their programs, saving both time and money. For more information about WGU Nevada, visit nevada.wgu.edu.
