Award Marks First Time a U.S. Student Has Been Selected
HENDERSON, NV – May 9, 2018 – Coral Academy of Science Las Vegas (CASLV) recently announced eighth-grade student Chiara Kieper won a merit award in the Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Her poster was chosen for its originality, artistic merit and portrayal of this year’s theme: “The Future of Peace.” Her artwork of a black bird was meant to resemble a world gone wrong and placed in the top 12 of 23 merit award winners chosen from approximately 600,000 entries drawn by children ages 11 to 13 from 60 countries. This is the first time the United States has ever placed in this competition. For being one of the 23 international merit award winners, Kieper received a cash award of $500 and a certificate of achievement presented by the Las Vegas Breakfasters Lions Club, the local sponsor of the contest.
“It was an honor to have our Coral Academy student participate in this amazing contest,” said Ercan Aydogdu, executive director for CASLV. “We are so happy for Chiara to have gotten as far as she did in such an intense competition. We always encourage our students to follow their dreams and praise them for all of their accomplishments.”
For the last 31 years, the Lions International Peace Poster Contest has encouraged young people worldwide to express their visions of peace through art. Posters submitted by students advance through several judging levels: local, district, multiple district and international. At the international level, judges from the art, peace, youth, education and media communities select one grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners. The 2018 finalists’ posters will be featured at the 101st annual Lions Clubs International Convention on June 29 and 30 in Las Vegas.
