Nevada Supreme Court Justice James Hardesty Files for Re-Election
Justice James Hardesty filed for re-election in Carson City today, seeking his third six-year term with the Nevada Supreme Court.
Hardesty was first elected to the Nevada Supreme Court in 2004, and retained without opposition in 2010. He served as Chief Justice in 2009 and 2015, and successfully implemented Nevada’s Court of Appeals, which was approved by voters in 2014. Since its implementation, the Court of Appeals has helped reduce the backlog of pending Supreme Court cases by more than 400.
In 2015, Hardesty was also elected as Second Vice President and a member of the board of directors for the Conference of Chief Justices, a national organization composed of the states’ and territories’ top jurists. He was the first Nevada chief justice to be elected as an officer with the organization, and the fourth to be elected to their board of directors.
“It has been my privilege to work for the citizens of Nevada, and an honor to serve on the Nevada Supreme Court,” said Hardesty. “With this filing, I will continue to work tirelessly for an effective, efficient appeals process for all Nevadans, and further improve our state’s judicial system alongside my dedicated colleagues.”
In his 12 years of Supreme Court service, Hardesty negotiated the approval of a Supreme Court courthouse in Las Vegas, which reduced the court’s rent by $500,000 over the next 10 years. He also secured $3 million in state general funding to support specialty courts throughout Nevada for fiscal years 2016 and 2017. Hardesty was unanimously nominated by his Supreme Court colleagues for the William H. Rehnquist Award for Judicial Excellence in 2013, a nomination that was supported by the Chief Judges for the Second and Eighth Judicial District Courts.
A native Nevadan, Hardesty graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno and practiced law in Reno from 1975 through 1998. He was elected District Court Judge for the Second Judicial District of Washoe County in November 1998, and elected by his fellow judges to serve as Chief Judge in 2001 and 2003. Hardesty also served as president of the Nevada District Judges Association in 2003.
