Nathan Adelson Hospice partners with The Moyer Foundation to present another complimentary camp weekend for grieving youth
(Las Vegas – April 10, 2015) – To help Southern Nevada youths experiencing grief from the death of someone close to them, Nathan Adelson Hospice has partnered with The Moyer Foundation for its Second Annual Camp Erin® Las Vegas. Camp Erin, held annually at Potosi in Las Vegas, is a special three-day camp weekend for children between the ages of 6 and 17.
Held from June 12 – 14 this year, Camp Erin offers a free weekend-long experience filled with traditional, fun camp activities combined with grief education and emotional support, led by grief professionals and trained volunteers. The fun, familiar environment of camp is combined with planned activities that give children a chance to honor their loved ones, express their feelings, and make lasting friendships with peers who have had similar experiences.
Camp registration is now open. Space is limited, and campers are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Children from military families are invited and encouraged to apply. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, an estimated 1.5 million children lose a parent each year, and countless others experience the death of a relative, friend or someone else close to them. Children often feel isolated in their grief, but rarely receive formal counseling. Research indicates these children are at a much greater risk for depression, suicide, poverty and substance abuse.
Started by World Series Champion pitcher Jamie Moyer and his wife Karen, The Moyer Foundation’s Camp Erin program is specifically designed for children affected by the death of someone close to them. Since the first camp in 2002, Camp Erin has expanded to become the nation’s largest network of bereavement camps, with 46 locations that serve more than 2,800 children annually across the country.
