Nonprofit, online university to award up to 10 scholarships
to members of the Latin Chamber
NEVADA (December 15, 2015) — In collaboration with the Las Vegas Latin Chamber of Commerce, WGU Nevada is encouraging busy professionals to embark on a continuing education journey by offering more than $30,000 in scholarships to members of the chamber. The WGU Nevada Otto Merida Scholarship was created in honor of the founder and long-serving chief executive officer of the Latin Chamber of Commerce.
“WGU Nevada is proud to partner with the Latin Chamber of Commerce to create the Otto Merida Scholarship, honoring an important figure in the chamber’s history and development,” said WGU Nevada Chancellor Dr. Spencer Stewart. “These scholarships are one of the many ways we are helping Nevadans achieve their educational and career goals.”
The scholarships, valued at up to $3,200 per student, will be applied at the rate of $800 per six-month term, renewable for up to four terms. Scholarships are available to new students looking to earn a bachelor’s or master’s degree in any of WGU Nevada’s more than 50 degree programs in information technology, business, teacher education, or healthcare. Potential awardees must be a member of the chamber, or belong to a member company, which comprises more than 800 members.
Unlike traditional schools, WGU Nevada starts new terms on the first of every month, so it’s never too late to begin the journey. To be considered for one of the Otto Merida Scholarships, prospective students must be officially admitted to WGU Nevada and submit a scholarship application by Jan. 31, 2016. This is a competitive program and scholarships will be awarded based on an applicant’s academic record, financial need, readiness for online study at WGU Nevada, current competency, as well as other considerations.
WGU Nevada uses an innovative approach to learning called competency-based education, which measures learning rather than time spent in class. Students earn their degrees by demonstrating mastery of the subject matter they need to know to be successful—real-world competencies developed with employer input. Designed to meet the needs of adult learners in Nevada, competency-based education allows students to take advantage of their knowledge and experience to move quickly through material they already know so they can focus on what they still need to learn. Faculty members work one-on-one with students as mentors, offering guidance, support, and individualized instruction.
